Child Support Division

The Child Support Division of the State's Attorney's Office for St. Mary's County works collaboratively with the St. Mary's County Department of Social Services, Bureau of Child Support to:

  • Establish paternity in IV-D cases;
  • Obtain child support and medical insurance orders;
  • Enforce current court orders;
  • Modify existing court orders;
  • Criminally prosecute non-custodial parents when the Bureau of Support has exhausted all other methods of enforcement.

Under Federal law, all states are required to have a Child Support Enforcement IV-D Program, which is part of a Federal-state-county effort established in 1975. In Maryland, the Department of Human Services, Child Support Administration, through its' local Department of Social Services, Bureau of Child Support is the designated IV-D agency.
