The Circuit Court Division of the State’s Attorney’s Office prosecutes felony cases, juvenile matters, and child support actions. Felony cases include rape, murder, robbery, drug dealing, and major thefts. Each year, over three hundred felony cases are filed. Most cases are presented to the Grand Jury sitting in St. Mary’s County for indictment. These cases are tried to either a jury or a judge sitting alone.
The juvenile prosecutor reviews all cases involving offenders under the age of 18, and files charges in Circuit Court when appropriate to help rehabilitate offenders. The prosecutor and Department of Juvenile Services work together to satisfy victims, protect the community, and redirect juveniles onto positive paths.
The Child Support Division files hundreds of actions each year to establish paternity and collect child support for children in our county. In 2013 alone, the division collected over $11 million for our children.
