Piney Point Lighthouse Waterfront Festival - May 13-14, 2006

For many, the highlight of the festival is a climb to the top of the Piney Point Lighthouse tower. From the top, one can see the Virginia shore, the Valero facility, St. George Island, and the Piney Point community.

Part of the morning program included remarks by Liza Recto (at podium), President of the Chesapeake Bay Runner's Club, who organized the Lower Potomac River Marathon in March that encompassed the Piney Point/St. George area. Liza presented a check to the Museum Division's Historic Sites Coordinator Lydia Wood to benefit the Piney Point Lighthouse from proceeds of the marathon.

Members of Ducks Unlimited offered an exhibit in the Potomac River Maritime Exhibit building. Here members demonstrate duck decoy carving skills and answer questions from festival goers.

The "Samuel M. Bailey" is a restored oyster buy boat piloted by Captain Steve Bailey from Bushwood, MD. Capt. Steve operated tours to the site of the sunken German submarine U-1105 from the Piney Point Lighthouse pier during the festival.
