The St. Clement's Island Museum hosted "Maryland
Day" to recognized and commemorate the founding of the Great State
of Maryland with the first colonial landing at St. Clement's Island
on March 25, 1634. Maryland Day ceremonies began with the raising of
the U. S. flag by members of the American Legion Post 221 in Avenue
accompanied by members of the St. Maries Citty Militia.

U.S. Congressman Steny Hoyer attended the
Maryland Day celebration and shared remarks and a chuckle with
the audience. Congressman Hoyer, a resident of St. Mary's
County, has been a true advocate for the preservation of the
history and heritage of Southern Maryland.

The audience enjoyed the Maryland perspective of
keynote speaker Dan Patrell, editor and publisher of Maryland Life
Magazine. Dan enjoyed participating in this Maryland Day event and
expressed how he shares his love of Maryland every day by bringing
the history, uniqueness, and diversity of Maryland, its people and
places, to the readers of his magazine.

No birthday party would be complete without a birthday cake. To
celebrate Maryland's 374th birthday, Peter Schmitter, pastry
chef at Wildewood Pastry Shop in California, MD, was
commissioned to create a cake for this very special day.
