 POSITION:                   Legal Assistant I -S04, $30,971 + LIMITED FRINGE BENEFITS

                                   (Grant Funded, No Retiree Health)

DEPARTMENT:             Office of the States Attorney /Child Support Division

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High school diploma or G.E.D.

Experience: Six months or more of related experience.

Note: Any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience which has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities cited below may be considered.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

       Must pass extensive background investigation;

       Negative drug test result from pre-employment drug screen;

       Successful candidate must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States prior to employment.

 

JOB SUMMARY: Performs a wide variety of clerical legal tasks; performs other duties as assigned.

 

DUTIES:

       Answers incoming calls, assists callers and redirects appropriately;

       Assists those contacting the office in person or directing them to the person best suited to assist them;

       Provides case preparation and management services to the States Attorneys Office and the Court System including but not limited to:

a)       Prepares case files and performs data entry for States Attorneys records;

b)       Tracks preparation and progress of cases and assures time requirements are met;

c)       Prepares motions, pleadings and discovery for dissemination to the Court for opposing council as needed;

d)       Ability to navigate the child support enforcement systems (CSES) and access information necessary to perform duties and assist clients;

e)       Accesses the Maryland Automated Benefit System (MABS) and inputs the social security number of on-custodial parents for the purpose of determining income in order calculate guidelines for the Courts;

f)         Accesses the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) database to obtain driving records;

g)       Composes and prepares correspondence for attorneys.

       Performs other duties as assigned; these duties may vary from day to day.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

       Ability to gain thorough knowledge of St. Marys County Government policies and procedures;

       Ability to effectively communicate with other staff, attorneys, victims, witnesses, and members of the public;

       Ability to apply departmental policies and procedures to daily work tasks;

       Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions;

       Ability to work with limited supervision and maintain accurate records;

       Ability to plan, organize, and execute complicated and continuing assignments accurately, with minimum instruction or review;

       Effective business English, grammar, legal terminology, and math skills.

 

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Work requires no unusual demand for physical effort.

 

Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meeting rooms, e.g., use of safe work place practices with office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls.

 

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS:

Hiring Salary:  $30,971 annually 

FLSA: Non-Exempt
