Homeowners age 70 and over who receive a State of Maryland Homeowners’ Property Tax Credit can now receive an additional credit on their real property tax bill from St. Mary’s County.  Applications for the State of Maryland Homeowners’ Property Tax Credit Program can be obtained by calling 1-800-944-7403 or click here to download the form in PDF format.

The State of Maryland will send you one of the following after processing your state tax credit application:

  •  A credit directly on your July 2008 property tax bill if the application is received before May 1, 2008, or

  • A tax credit certificate to be used towards payment of the tax bill or for a refund if the bill has already been paid; or

  • A written letter of denial stating the reason for ineligibility.

A new application must be filed with the State of Maryland every year if you wish to be considered for a state tax credit.

To apply for the St. Mary’s County Senior Property Tax Credit, you must submit a properly completed tax credit application, proof of your age  (such as a copy of driver’s license or birth certificate), and the confirmation copy of the state tax credit received.  County tax credit applications can be obtained by calling 301-475-4473, or by visiting the Treasurer’s Office in Leonardtown

Upon receipt of your completed application, the St. Mary’s County Treasurer’s Office will verify your information and generate a tax credit equal to the state credit received but not exceeding your remaining tax bill/liability.  If your property is transferred during the tax year, all of the Senior Tax Credit received will need to be repaid to St. Mary’s County.  A new application must be submitted each year.

Should you have any questions concerning the Senior Property Tax Credit Program, please call 301-475-4473.
